BIOs Giuseppe Balirano and Mariaconcetta Costantini
Giuseppe Balirano is Full Professor of English Language and Translation at the University of Naples L’Orientale, where he also serves as the Rector’s Delegate for Lifelong Learning, eLearning, and Multimedia Enhancement. He is Principal Investigator of both the Hate Speech and Social Practices Observatory and the PRIN-funded project “Echoes of Hate.” He is currently President of the Italian Association for the Study of English (AIA), Editor-in-Chief of the journal Textus, and director of the editorial series BeTwiXt and ALLIeD – Journal of Applied Linguistics and Languages in Educational Digital Settings. His research interests include English linguistics, cultural and multimodal studies, with particular attention to the representation of identity, gender, and sexuality in digital and audiovisual media. He has published extensively in Italy and abroad on topics ranging from critical discourse analysis and queer studies to multimodality and media communication, with a specific focus on film language and audiovisual translation practices.
Mariaconcetta Costantini is Professor of English Literature at Gabriele d’Annunzio University of Chieti-Pescara, Italy, and, since 2021, a Visiting Professor at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln, UK. Her research primarily focuses on Victorian studies, with a special interest in sensation fiction, the Gothic, and gender. She also works on contemporary literature, especially on postcolonial authors. She is the author of six monographs, several edited collections, journal articles, and book chapters, which have appeared in Italy and abroad. Within the field of postcolonial studies, she has recently co-edited the volumes: Becoming Home. Diaspora and the Anglophone Transnational (Vernon Press, 2022) and Rethinking Identities Across Boundaries: Genders/Genres/Genera (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024). She is co-editor-in-chief of the peer-reviewed open-access journal Victorian Popular Fictions and President of AISCLI.
